Trade fairs, pow wows, ceremonial dances - visit Taos Pueblo where you can experience a Pueblo tradition.
Steeped in traditions of over a thousand years, Taos Pueblo is the most scenic and northern-most of all the pueblos in New Mexico. UNESCO inscribed the multi-storied adobe village on the World Heritage list.
Take a step back in time and one of these Taos Pueblo special events:
January 1 - TURTLE DANCE, men's traditional symbolic animal dance. 8am-2pm.
January 6 - DEER OR BUFFALO DANCE, traditional symbolic animal dance. 2-4pm.
May 3 - SANTA CRUZ FEAST DAY, traditional foot race and corn dance. Race-8am; Dance-2pm.
June 13 - SAN ANTONIO FEAST DAY, traditional corn dance. 2pm.
June 24 - SAN JUAN FEAST DAY, traditional corn dance. 2pm.
Second weekend of July - TAOS PUEBLO POW WOW, inter-tribal dancers from all over the country dance for entertainment and competition. 10am-midnight, Friday through Sunday.
July 25/26 - SANTIAGO / SANTA ANA FEAST DAYS, traditional corn dance. 2pm.
Sept 29/30 - SAN GERONIMO FEAST DAY, Arts & Crafts fair, evening vespers, traditional foot race, traditional pole climb. Sept 29 noon; Sept 30 8am-evening.
Dec. 24 - CHRISTMAS EVE, vespers and procession, with dancers and bonfires. 4pm-9pm.
Dec. 25 - DEER OR MATACHINA DANCE. 1-4pm.
